Business Model Development for 2030 Water Resource Group

The problem

Many farmers do not use water efficiently. Others are unable to irrigate at all, reducing productivity. New businesses which combine water conservation with increased agricultural productivity are needed.

How we helped

The 2030 Water Resource Group—a public, private, civil society partnership—engaged Castalia to see what could be done. We developed new business models that would increase the efficient use of water in agriculture and promote uptake of these technologies by maximizing the income of smallholder farmers. Our business model development works through incorporating new irrigation technologies and crop varieties. We built a financial model to forecast cash flows for companies and farmers, and conducted an economic cost benefit analysis of the proposed models, demonstrating that they were privately profitable and socially beneficial. We identified industry players who could spread awareness of the models while providing technology support and financing.

Impact

Our business model development has given governments a tool to use in the agriculture sector.
