Water Sector Investment Opportunity for World Bank Private Sector

The problem

Although the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is the most water scarce region in the world, less than five percent of the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC’s) portfolio of water investments was in that region. The IFC was seeking water sector investment opportunities in the MENA.

How we helped

Castalia analyzed the water sector in the five priority MENA countries (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan and Yemen) to identify opportunities for IFC investments and advisory services. We identified 84 projects and screened them to create a shortlist of 12 opportunities. We worked with the IFC to convert the shortlisted opportunities into IFC investment mandates.

Impact

The IFC was able to consider water sector investment opportunities in the MENA region that would address water scarcity. It further pursued four investment and four advisory opportunities.
