Pipeline of Viable Renewable Energy Projects, Chile

Client needs

USTDA wanted to help Chile move away from fossil fuels toward cheaper, more efficient sustainable energy sources by funding feasibility studies for renewable energy projects.

How Castalia helped

• Screened candidate projects based on their technical and commercial viability, the capability of local sponsors, likelihood of securing financing, environmental and social impacts, and potential to lead to export of US goods and services
• Made field visits to each project site
• Full pre-feasibility assessments of a 100MW wind project in Chiloé, a 5MW combined power and district heating project in Puerto Natales, a 58MW biomass plant in Mulchén, and two run-of-river hydro plants in Mulchén
• Developed terms of reference for feasibility studies for each of the identified projects.

The outcome of our work

USTDA provided a $610,000 grant to Eólica Tablaruca, a Chilean developer, for a 260MW wind project on Chiloé. This project commenced commercial operations in 2015.
