Suriname Electricity Sector Plan

The problem

Despite more than US$880 million in subsidies to the electricity sector over five years, more than 50,000 people lacked electricity service in Suriname. For the 500,000 people with service, service interruptions and voltage instability were frequent.

How we helped

We developed an Electricity Sector Plan which set out the financial, technical, institutional and governance steps that would put the sector on a sound financial footing, enable service to be improved and connect unelectrified households.

To prepare the Plan we forecasted demand, developed Suriname’s first-ever low-cost expansion plan, recommended a new tariff, developed a rural electrification strategy, and built stakeholders’ decision-making capacity.

Impact

The Electricity Sector Plan was adopted by the Government as the first milestone in the process of restructuring the electricity sector to achieve 100 percent electrification with high-quality, sustainable service.
