Findings from the “Decarbonizing Water: Applying the Voluntary Carbon Market toward Global Water Security” report are now available at the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) most recent ES&T Water publication. ACS is one of the world’s largest scientific societies and provides a library of peer-reviewed scientific articles.

Currently, two billion people don’t have access to safe drinking water, and four billion experience water stress at least once a year. Climate change worsens water stress for people who already experience it and gradually exposes more people to water insecurity. The water sector contributes 10% of global carbon emissions.

Since 2010, water-related carbon projects have produced over 45 million emission reduction credits. Our analysis estimates local water projects that reduce emissions can produce over 1.6 billion tCO2e of carbon credits annually worldwide. This could attract over $160 billion in carbon credit investments towards water security projects.

The voluntary carbon market (VCM) presents opportunities for a global, sustainable, performance-based funding stream to expand safe water access. We will continue working alongside The University of Colorado Boulder’s Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience to explore options for implementation with stakeholders.
