Alternative Insurance Policies for Medicines Australia

The problem

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) provides subsidized prescription drugs to residents of Australia, ensuring they have access to affordable necessary medicines. Private insurers do not offer pharmaceutical benefits. Non-publicly listed medicines, as a result, are often unaffordable and not easily accessible. Medicines Australia sought to propose insurance policies which could provide consumers with greater means with better access to medicines that have not yet met public listing requirements.

How we helped

We recommended insurance policies to Medicines Australia, aiming at both fiscal relief and increased patient access to new medicines. Our analysis was based on a principle of means-testing to maintain the accessibility goals embedded in the Australian health system.

Impact

The policy recommendations were received by Medicines Australia. Unfortunately, no further actions were taken due to change in management.
