Seafood Industry Growth Strategy, New Zealand

The problem

Seafood New Zealand sought advice on how the seafood industry could help the New Zealand government meet its goal of doubling primary sector exports between 2012 and 2025.

How we helped

Castalia developed a paper describing the current constraints on sector growth and how they could be overcome. We found that export growth could be increased if fisheries management delivered better value for money, and if public goods were not solely funded through industry levies. We also recommended improving industry co-ordination to access price premiums, and reforming regulations that currently constrain the seafood industry’s “license to grow”.

Impact

Following our advice, it was announced at the NZ Seafood Industry Conference 2016 that the seafood industry is on track to double its export revenues by 2025.
