Valuing Contact Energy for an Investor, New Zealand

The problem

Edison Mission Energy was selling its controlling stake in Contact Energy, a stock-exchange listed hydro-generation, electricity retail and gas supply business in New Zealand. Our client, an Australian energy business, was bidding on the stake, and needed market information to value Contact Energy.

How we helped

Castalia provided supply and demand forecasts, wholesale and retail price paths for electricity and gas, and CPI forecasts. We advised on the regulatory outlook and key risks for the electricity sector. We modelled likely revenues under different scenarios for regulation and other business risks.

Impact

Our client used our advice to bid for the shares, but was outbid by Origin Energy, which acquired the majority shareholding in Contact Energy in July 2004 for US$1.0 billion.
